BURNS GALA
Every year in the Winter, the Scottish Society of Louisville pays tribute to Scotland's most famous and revered poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), by hosting an elegant evening which includes the Haggis procession and an eclectic selection of poems, music, toasting, dining and dancing. All efforts have been made to make the evening a memorable event reflecting our Scottish heritage and traditions; the same heritage and traditions that inspired Robert Burns and now so eloquently and evocatively nurture his memory.
We are excited to introduce a new tradition - Our Recognition of the Clans. Please be sure to submit your clan affiliation(s) when you order your tickets so we ca be sure to have you positioned in the evening's program. if you are unsure as to your clan affiliation, please call (502) 553-7185. This is sure to become a popular portion of the program as we proudly honor our clan heritage.
The Burns Night Gala for 2012 will be on February 4th at the Olmsted in Louisville, KY.. As in years past, the evening will include dinner, toasts, a kilt/skirt raffle, fun and entertainment! As this is the Society's 20th celebration, there will be some special and unexpected additions to the evening's program. You will want to be a part of this very special event!

Liz Curtis Higgs to Speak at June, 2012 Monthly Meeting
Liz Curtis Higgs has been telling tales since she attempted her first novel—handwritten in a marble notebook—at the tender age of ten. Award-winning careers in radio broadcasting, public speaking, nonfiction writing, and children’s books honed Liz’s storytelling talents, bringing her back to her first love, writing fiction.
She has graciously accepted our invitation to speak at our June 26 regular meeting. She will talk about her new book inspired by Scotland "My Heart's in the Lowlands".
She is the author of 28 books, with more than 3 million copies in print. Her fiction includes two contemporary novels, one novella, and six historical novels.
Her children ’s Parable Series received a 1998 ECPA Gold Medallion for Excellence, her nonfiction book Embrace Grace won a 2007 Retailers Choice Award, and her novel Whence Came a Prince received a 2006 Christy Award for Best Historical Novel. Here Burns My Candle was named 2010 Best Inspirational Romance by RT Book Reviews, and her 2011 novel, Mine Is the Night, was a New York Times bestseller. Liz was also an award-winning columnist for Today’s Christian Woman for ten years. Articles by Liz have appeared in Faith&Friends in Canada, Woman Alive in Great Britain, and Enhance in Australia. More than 4,500 churches nationwide are using her video Bible study series, Loved by God.
A gifted professional speaker, Liz has presented more than 1,600 inspirational programs for audiences in all fifty United States and thirteen foreign countries, including Thailand, Portugal, and Indonesia. Magical interludes from the haunting uilleann pipes, whistles, low whistles and of course the Irish harp along with some of Irelands finest exponents of traditional song transport the listener to that crossroads in Ireland. Tempestuous fiddle playing competes with explosive banjo, intricate mandolin, accordion, mandola and bouzouki and awe-inspiring guitar riffs, while silky flute playing remind the audience that these fiercely traditional musicians are also classically trained.
